OK peeps, I can’t keep putting it off. The thing I have most dreaded writing has been what is supposed to be the “first” blog post---the “let me introduce you to me and my blog” post. I have been dreading it just because I haven’t been sure how to write it or what to write in it. I’ve even Googled “how to write your first blog post” and it still hasn’t helped me! So, instead of putting it off and thus putting off the things I really want to write about, I guess I will just oblige already.
My name is Sarah. I am a creative person who dabbles in many mediums but I’ve never felt like I’ve found my true creative outlet. I majored in studio art and French in college (my emphasis was in photography), I like to paint, I enjoy crafting and DIY projects, I have fun baking and trying new recipes, I love decorating and making any space feel beautiful and comfortable. And I always think in stories. My whole life I have dreamed and fantasized by making up stories in my head—continuously. Often, I don’t even realize that I’ve slipped into one of my stories or daydreams because it is such a habit. They have been my escape from reality when I’ve needed it, they are my inspiration, and they are how I motivate myself to become the person I want to be.
I lived in France for a couple periods in my life (Living the Parisian Dream is my first attempt at blogging during that time) and I remember thinking how romantic their term for daydreaming is—je suis dans la lune. Literally it means I am in the moon, or we would say, my head is in the clouds. I think it is such a beautiful phrase and it has stuck with me. I think of it often when I catch myself “thinking.”
A Terracotta Life started because of all of this. Firstly, I need a creative outlet. This blog will allow me to write, take pictures, do some illustration and design, as well as explore things in my life that I can then share with you.
My husband and I live in a tiny house, dubbed Lil Blue, on an organic meat farm in Central Iowa. It is 160 square feet: 8 feet wide by 20 feet long, and it has an additional 8x8ft loft where we sleep. It has been a dream for the past few years to build a tiny house and live a simpler, freer life.
The thought behind the title of this blog comes from the fact that a terracotta pot is the simplest planter to grow something in. It’s so simple but it can be the most beautiful planter in the garden. Our home and our lifestyle is small and simple too but it is so beautiful and I am excited to share it with you.
